Student Accounts

Use our guide to help you choose the best day-to-day current account.

Designed specifically for students, these accounts offer beneficial rates and terms- often a UCAS offer letter is all that's required as proof so you can even open one before you become a fully signed up student.

Banks love students- their philosophy is to catch you young with a view to cashing in when you become that high flier you're destined to be. They know that most people are loyal to their bank for life so make sure you choose wisely; shop around as not all student bank accounts are equal..

Managing your money: A good tip is to open a separate bank account, without an overdraft facility for day-to-day costs to keep your spending down. A good way to keep an eye on your spending is by checking your bank statements (online if you can), and always check your balance when withdrawing money from a cashpoint.

TOP TIP

Banks touting their wares at Freshers Fairs don't necessarily offer the best deals (don't be tempted by the freebies- only look to them in a tie-break situation!!) The wrong account could end up costing you more than the price of a popcorn maker.

Focus on the overdraft- the bigger the better with the longest 0% overdraft facility. All student accounts offer overdrafts, enabling you to withdraw more money than you've put in there, i.e. to borrow it. What you'll pay to borrow it depends on the interest rate. As a student you can borrow interest free as long as you stick within the overdraft limits...if you don't you'll be hit by high interest rates and penalties. Remember, overdrafts don't last forever- the 0 per cent debt is not "free money"; it will eventually have to be paid back. So, only borrow if you have to. And, as all debts will have to be repaid once you graduate, only spend when you have to (and use our website to save you money on all those necessities!!).

Halifax

Student Current Account

Best for overdraft (but only if you're eligible!)

Halifax has the joint highest 0% overdraft at up to £3000/year, but don't count on being eligible for it. Last year fewer than 40% of the applicants got the full overdraft. While Halifax offers the best overdraft they're also sneaky sneaky with their fees. They ll charge you 24.2% on unauthorised overdrafts as well as a £28 fee per month and a £20 a day charge for every transaction that takes you into the red. You have been warned...... It's worth noting that Halifax does offer one of the lowest interest rates on agreed overdrafts (7.2%) so Halifax is a good choice for those in control of their finances.

FREEBIES? You get breakdown cover and commission free travellers cheques and currency.
