Home/Contents Insurance
|
Endsleigh have found that students take with them an average of £2000- £5000 worth of stuff. In most cases your parents home insurance policy does not automatically cover you at university so please check before you make this assumption.
Apart from insuring against expensive breakages, insurance will also cover you in the event of theft- it's a sad fact that thieves often target student houses (Confused.com revealed that Student households are more than twice as likely to be burgled compared to the average home). As a result it is always worth backing up your work on an external hard drive or USB stick in case the worst should happen... TOP TIP:
If your house has a burglar alarm and window locks let your insurance providers know as it could reduce your home insurance premium.
An alternative to getting your own contents insurance is to get covered on your parents insurance. Many insurance companies allow parents to purchase add-on cover for students living away from home. It'll cost approximately £50 extra a year for £5000 worth of cover, although it probably won't cover belongings outside your room.
