Utility Bills (Gas, electricity and water)

While some landlords include utility bills within the rent, most will leave it to you to sort out. Before you move in remember to ask them which energy providers they or previous tenants registered with. Each utility bill must be put in one persons name, therefore we recommend splitting the bills so that each of you have to take responsibility for receiving a specific bill, i.e. gas. The day you move in you must read the gas and electricity meters and pass the readings on to your utility providers (this ensures you won't be paying for previous tenants' usage)

REMEMBER Paying bills late can tarnish your credit history so remember to be prompt with payments (both your own and your housemates) to protect each other.

To ensure swift payment of bills it might be a good idea to open an additional online current account (which will have to be in just one persons name) to act as a bill kitty, with everyone paying a fixed amount (you'll have to estimate to begin with, usually about £50 each a month should do it) by standing order every month. All direct debits can then come from this account. Remember to ask to get any overdraft facility turned off.

It's worth shopping around for utilities as different companies charge different prices- you can make sure you're getting the best deal by using the comparison functionality of the sites below; they could save you hundreds of pounds.
